Avoid Being Bitten

How to Prevent a Dog Bite

  • Never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one that's tied up, behind a fence, or inside a car.
  • Don't pet a dog—even your own—without allowing them to see and sniff you first.
  • Never turn your back and run from a dog. This can trigger a chase instinct.
  • Avoid disturbing a dog while it’s sleeping, eating, chewing on a toy, or caring for puppies.
  • Always be cautious around unfamiliar dogs—they may see you as a threat.

What To Do If You Think a Dog May Attack

  • Resist the impulse to scream or run.
  • Stand still with your hands at your sides and avoid eye contact.
  • When the dog loses interest, slowly back away—don’t turn your back.
  • If the dog attacks, use anything you can as a barrier: a jacket, purse, backpack, or bike.
  • If you're knocked down, curl into a ball, cover your ears and neck with your hands, and stay still.

What to Do If You Are Bitten or Attacked By a Dog

  • Try to stay calm.
  • Wash the wound immediately with soap and warm water.
  • Contact your physician for proper medical care.
  • Report the bite to your local animal control agency.
  • Provide as much detail as possible about the dog and its owner.
    • If the dog is a stray, describe its appearance, where it was last seen, and which direction it went.
