Fire Investigations

Prevention of fires is the priority of the Lake Cities Fire Department.  When a fire does happen, the Fire Department Prevention Division responds to unintentional fires, incendiary fires, fire alarms, fire deaths, and bomb threats within the Lake Cities Area.

Types of Fires

Unintentional Fires

Fires may be unintentional or accidental due to faulty electrical wiring, overloaded of the electrical systems, candles or smoking materials (such as cigarettes, fireplace or heating devices), improper storage of flammable chemicals (gasoline, propane, paint thinners), cooking fires, or many other types of unintentional fires.

Natural Disaster Fires

Fires can also be caused by natural disaster or acts of nature (lighting strike or decomposition of materials).

Incendiary Fires

In other cases, the fire may be incendiary, meaning that the fire was intentionally started also known as arson. Some of the common motives for setting intentional fires are for profit (insurance fraud), concealment of another crime (such as a home invasion, homicide, a vehicle used in a crime), revenge and vandalism.

If a fire is determined to be arson, a criminal investigation is conducted to include the arrest and prosecution of arsonists.  In many cases, fire investigators work with federal, state, county, and local agencies, such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), State Fire Marshal's Office, Denton County Arson Task Force, and the Corinth, Lake Dallas, and Hickory Creek Police Department.

Any information concerning suspicious fire should be reported to the Lake Cities Fire Prevention Office (940) 279-4590 or call the Arson Reward Hotline (877) 434-7345, if your information leads to the arrest of the person responsible for the fire, you may receive a reward of up to $1,000.
