The Lake Cities Fire Department (LCFD) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year!
First known as the Lake Dallas Fire Department, the organization began as a volunteer department in 1959. As the population of Corinth, Shady Shores, and Hickory Creek flourished, the name was changed to Lake Dallas Area Fire Department and then finally Lake Cities Fire Department in the 1970’s.
LCFD was a non-profit corporation and hired their first chief, Scott Thompson, in 1997. Over the next several years, the four Lake Cities experienced a vast growth and an increase in call volume. With the need of the citizens rising, the corporation started moving towards an all paid staff, supplemented by only a few volunteers. Today, the department has forty-eight trained firefighter/paramedics.
On January 18, 2008, the City of Corinth acquired LCFD and it became an internal department included in the City’s General Fund. Lake Dallas, Shady Shores, and Hickory Creek entered into an inter-local agreement with Corinth for fire services that same year. The fire department continues to serve all four cities today.
"The fire department was built on a long standing tradition of loyalty, respect, and courage. Core values that withstood for sixty years and each and every member follows today," stated Fire Chief Michael Ross "Many thanks to past and current members of the department, city council members and the communities themselves for the support, dedication and commitment to keep the Lake Cities Area a safe place to live."
The fire department has operated out of two fire houses and a headquarters building. The headquarter building, located on Garrison, was originally built in the late 1980s by volunteer members. Its use as a fire station ended in January 2004. The building was remodeled into an administration building by members of the fire department in 2003 and used for this purpose until 2018. Fire House No. 1, located on Main Street in Lake Dallas, was built in the 1960s by volunteer members. The fire station was torn down and replaced by the current building in 2001. Fire Station No. 2, located on W. Shady Shores, was built by the City of Corinth in 2003.
In May 2018, Fire Administration moved into a shared Joint Public Safety Center, located on FM2181, with the Police Department. Housing all public safety administration under the same roof helped centralize communications and resources between the two departments. The site also included the addition of 11,820 square-foot fire house. The City is in the process of hiring nine new firefighters to staff fire house no. 3. Fire House No. 3 is scheduled to be fully operational on February 18, 2019.
LCFD will host a promotional ceremony for members of the department and celebrate the 60th Anniversary on Friday, March 1, 2019, 9:00 am at Fire House No.3.
